Reports of a new offer made for Patrik Laine emerges
There's a trade proposal circulating involving Patrik Laine, the top trade target from the Columbus Blue Jackets, being sent to the Montreal Canadiens.
Just last week, it was announced that Patrik Laine had requested a move away from Columbus for a change of scenery.
Kent Hughes is likely to pursue his "Kirby Dach" trade strategy this season, with Patrik Laine emerging as one of the prime candidates.
The Finnish sensation stands at 6 feet 5 inches and weighs 215 pounds. At 26 years old, he has amassed 388 points, with 204 goals, in 480 career NHL games.
Arpon Basu of The Athletic discussed in his podcast the potential cost to acquire Patrik Laine, suggesting he could be a more affordable option compared to targets like Martin Necas and Trevor Zegras.
«I see a fit for Patrik Laine in Montreal. It's a reasonable risk, and I'm sure Columbus would be willing to retain a percentage of his $8.7 million contract. [...]
The Canadiens have some flexibility. Maybe instead of asking Columbus to retain part of his salary, they could add a player like Christian Dvorak and eliminate his contract for the next season. I think there are many ways to make a trade like this, but I really think it's a good risk to take.»
- Arpon Basu «[They could] instead ask the Blue Jackets to swap the fourth and fifth picks in the draft. A situation that, according to Arpon Basu, would be a very reasonable price for Columbus, who would only move back one spot to get rid of Patrik Laine's $8.7 million contract.»

Although Laine remains one of the top goal scorers in the league, his injury history has likely diminished his trade value, complicating his hefty $8.7 million contract. Nonetheless, the proposed trade between the Blue Jackets and Canadiens could potentially satisfy both teams.
TRADE PROPOSAL
To Montreal:
- Patrik Laine + the 4th overall pick in 2024
To Columbus:
- The 5th overall pick in 2024
The Canadiens would move up one spot in the draft, possibly securing a player who might not be available at the 5th pick. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets would drop down one spot but also clear $8.7 million from their salary cap.
