Sidney Crosby Addresses His Future with Penguins Amid Trade Speculation
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has revealed where he intends to spend the rest of his NHL career.
Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Penguins have been mired in rumors this season as the organization continues to trend towards a rebuild.
Lately, these rumors have blown up thanks to a few well-timed posts from NHL insiders.
After the Colorado Avalanche traded Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes, Frank Seravalli reported that an even bigger name was floating around trade rumors that same day.
Shortly after Seravalli's post, fellow insider Kevin Weekes made a cryptic post using a picture of the Pittsburgh skyline.
Naturally, this led to rampant speculation including the possibility that the Penguins were looking to trade Sidney Crosby.
That being said, this is what Crosby himself had to say about trade rumors earlier this season.
"I don't worry (about) that stuff. I've said I'm going to always be here. I just signed a new contract to be here. I've been very upfront about it - I'm a Pittsburgh Penguin."
Seems rather unequivocal. Crosby is not going anywhere.
Penguins reporter for the Athletic Josh Yohe spoke about these rumors in a new article today theorizing why these rumors have become so common despite the fact that there is little to no evidence to support any of them.
"Driving engagement and creating conversation is great and, make no mistake, every one of us in this industry does it. I'm no different. But I don't really think that's what's happening here. I suspect many in the hockey world are simply bored - maybe by the Penguins losing or maybe by seeing Crosby's final years being wasted. Maybe they're just so enamored with the thought of a blockbuster trade that would have one of the greatest players of all time finishing his career elsewhere. So, they're trying to will it into existence."
That being said, this does not mean that the Penguins won't have some big decisions to make in the coming months.
While Crosby remains firm in his commitment to the team, perhaps his long-time number 2 could move on before the end of his career.
One NHL insider believes that Evgeni Malkin could very well end up on a new club as soon as this March.
Malkin leaving the Penguins would certainly be an end of an era in its own right, but the impact would certainly not be as dramatic as if Sid himself left.
Still though, Kyle Dubas may be reluctant to make that move unless he is truly blown away by an offer. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
