The Vancouver Canucks may not have any healthy goaltenders to start the season, so they may be forced to make a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for one.

With the NHL offseason dwindling, the trade rumors are really starting to heat up, most notably regarding the Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canucks are in a state of uncertainty in their crease, with Thatcher Demko's long-term injury and Arturs Silovs' short-term setback putting the need to actively pursue solutions as quickly as possible. This has sent speculation of a potential trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins flying into plain view.
The latest rumblings suggest the Canucks should deal Connor Garland and a 2025 second-round draft pick to Pittsburgh, and in return, they would get goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, forward Lars Eller, a 2025 fifth-round pick that originally belonged to the Rangers, and a 2026 seventh-round pick that originally belonged to the Blackhawks.
Goaltending has been a sore spot for the Canucks, with the frequent injuries from Thatcher Demko. Alex Nedeljkovic has shown flashes of brilliance, which could offer stability in the net. Though his time in Detroit was not stellar, the 27-year-old does have a history of performing under pressure and may do well in Vancouver's system. Meanwhile, Lars Eller has been playoff-tested and adds real defensive game depth that would give the Canucks a more rounded bottom-six, which is something they've missed over the last couple of seasons.
Conor Garland, on the other hand, has had a bit of an up-and-down tenure with the Canucks. While he is talented as an offensive player, his contract has become a headache in Vancouver, carrying a little more than $4.9 million per year through 2026. Moving Garland would take that fairly high cap hit off the books for the Canucks, allowing them to make other moves down the road.
From the Penguins' perspective, adding Conor Garland would mean another dynamic scorer to their top-six forward group. The Penguins are trying to squeeze as much as they can out of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, whose best years are behind them, so adding a player in his prime like Garland would help raise their offense to another level. The added bonus of moving up into a second-round pick is always a positive, particularly as they look to retool both for now and into the future.
While this is still a speculative deal, this fills important needs on each side. The Canucks solve their immediate goaltending crisis and get some veteran help, and the Penguins strengthen their offensive lineup while acquiring a valuable asset to move at the draft.
The details of this possible trade may change as potential talks move further along. Both teams have plenty at stake, and it's clear that Vancouver, especially, will be active as they seek out answers in preparation for the new season. You cannot win in the NHL without adequate goaltending.
