Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz is still without a contract as the new NHL season approaches. The 33-year-old veteran is one of the top remaining free agents.

As the NHL Network highlights available free agents a month before training camps, Justin Schultz emerges as a notable name still on the market. The former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman, who celebrated Stanley Cup victories with the team in 2016 and 2017, is yet to secure a new deal.
Over the past two seasons with the Seattle Kraken, Schultz has demonstrated his skill by accumulating 60 points in 143 games. In total, Schultz has earned 110 points in 163 games since leaving Pittsburgh. His tenure with the Penguins from 2015 to 2020 was marked by solid performance, including 22 goals and 91 assists across 234 games.
Schultz, known for his late signings, finds himself in a rare position this offseason-without a contract as training camps near. Despite his track record, which includes being named to the All-Rookie Team in 2013 and his two Stanley Cup titles, Schultz has yet to sign a deal.
Social media buzz suggests a potential reunion with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers, having limited cap space of only $170,833, might consider offering Schultz a professional tryout (PTO) or a cost-effective contract.
If pursued, they would need to manage their cap space creatively to accommodate Schultz's potential contract, especially given his previous salary of $3 million per year with the Kraken.
Among the six notable defensemen still looking for new teams, Schultz's experience and past successes could make him a valuable asset to any team willing to invest in a seasoned player with championship pedigree.
