Now, after more than six years since the accident, Wassermann is ready for a new chapter. Formerly a goaltender for the Humboldt Broncos, he has embraced rowing-a sport he initially took up as a form of exercise rather than competitive ambition. His dedication to the sport has culminated in his selection to compete in the Men's Single Sculls at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
As Wassermann prepares for this significant event, he reflects on his journey with a sense of accomplishment.
"The fact that I've been able to get this far and be able to go out there is a pretty big accomplishment in my book already," Wassermann said. "You gotta be a little bit crazy, I think, to be a rower; to enjoy some of the pain that comes with it, but it's a bit of a thrill to be out there and on the water and doing things that I wasn't doing before I was injured. I wouldn't have been able to do something like this before."
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are set to begin on August 28th and will run until September 8th. Wassermann's events in the Men's Single Sculls will take place from August 30th through September 1st, starting at 4:10 A.M. EST. You can follow his heats schedule here: Men's Single Sculls Schedule.
Jacob Wassermann's story is a powerful reminder of human resilience and the ability to overcome even the most harrowing challenges. Regardless of the outcomes in Paris, Wassermann's journey continues to inspire and make Canada proud.
