There has been another very shocking waiver announcement in the NHL today, and this time it involves the Florida Panthers waiving a former 8th-overall pick. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks team back in 2018.
First reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Florida Panthers have indeed placed Adam Boqvist on waivers. He's only played in 18 games for the Panthers this season, scoring two goals and four assists for six points.
Boqvist hasn't been in the Panthers lineup since Jan. 6, so this move isn't shocking in that sense, but in terms of what his initial potential was back in 2018, it's a huge shock.
However, his demotion would leave the Panthers with just six defensemen on the roster, so Florida will probably recall a blueliner from the minors.
Boqvist has played in 227 career games, having scored 25 goals, and adding 66 assists for a total of 91 points.
One area of major concern in his career has been his plus/minus, as he is a -45, which clearly indicates a big problem with the defensive side of his game.
In other waiver news, Philipp Grubauer, who was placed on waivers yesterday by the Seattle Kraken, has cleared, while Brandon Saad was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
Teams will have just under 24 hours to put in a claim for him, so we will know fairly quickly whether he goes unclaimed or not.
