The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the 2023-24 NHL season with high hopes of returning to the playoffs after a disappointing previous year.

Despite a valiant late-season effort, the team fell short of securing a postseason berth, prompting reflections on their future trajectory. The franchise now faces a pivotal decision: whether to build around veteran captain Sidney Crosby for another Stanley Cup run or to pivot towards a youth-focused strategy.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Kevin Hayes and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft for future considerations.
Throughout the past seasons, the Penguins bolstered their roster with experienced additions such as defenseman Ryan Graves, Erik Karlsson, and forward Lars Eller. This offseason, they continued their trend by acquiring veteran center Kevin Hayes. These moves signal their commitment to surrounding Crosby with seasoned talent, aiming to maximize their championship window.
However, the Penguins are not merely relying on seasoned players. According to Tristin McKinstry of Clutch Points, Pittsburgh is eyeing younger talent to complement their core.
One potential target mentioned is Nicholas Robertson, a forward from the Toronto Maple Leafs who recently completed his entry-level contract and is now a restricted free agent. Robertson, known for his dynamic play and scoring ability, has yet to reach his full potential in Toronto.
The connection between Penguins' GM Kyle Dubas and Robertson adds intrigue to this potential trade. Dubas, formerly with the Maple Leafs, drafted Robertson in 2019, showcasing a keen eye for talent that could be pivotal in revitalizing Robertson's career in Pittsburgh. Despite Robertson's modest NHL statistics to date17 goals and 17 assists in 87 gamesMcKinstry believes he could thrive under Dubas' guidance, especially given his request for a fresh start away from Toronto.
Robertson's desire for a trade was acknowledged by Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who emphasized the player's value while acknowledging his frustration. Despite Toronto's efforts to retain him, Robertson's future with the team remains uncertain, prompting speculation about his next career move.
«Obviously, I have known that there was some frustration with Nick, but we look at Nick as an excellent player. There's great opportunity for Nick here. We need him to be a good player for us,» Treliving said on July 1 via TSN's Mark Masters.
As the Penguins assess their options heading into the new season, Robertson stands out as a potential asset. His scoring prowess and desire for a new opportunity align well with Pittsburgh's strategy of blending veteran leadership with emerging talent. With ample cap space still available, the Penguins are well-positioned to negotiate a deal that could elevate their roster dynamics and bolster their postseason ambitions.
The coming weeks will reveal whether Robertson becomes a Penguin and contributes to their quest for playoff success or pursues opportunities elsewhere. For now, Pittsburgh remains focused on refining its roster and preparing for the challenges of the upcoming NHL season.
