Over the past few days, it's become clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins hopes in 2024/25 may be dashed, with the team now set for a fire sale, with many players potentially becoming available via trade.
Now, this has brought plenty of heat down on General Manager Kyle Dubas, with Ryan Whitney of the Spittin' Chiclets podcast calling him out in a big way after he's done little to improve this team since taking over as GM.
Whitney's assessment of the situation and of Dubas' run thus far in Pittsburgh is spot on, as he's done nothing to either pivot this team towards the future or put talent around Sidney Crosby, as they now look like they'll be in the middle for years to come.
Unfortunately for Penguins fans, this came after he locked in No. 87 for likely the rest of his career, as Crosby is now stuck with a middling roster and no hopes of a final Stanley Cup run, raising the question over what he should do in his final NHL seasons.
There's plenty of questions in Pittsburgh that need answers, and while a fire sale could be good, that leaves Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang in a very weird spot, as they can stick it out with the Penguins or request a trade, but as of right now, Whitney and many NHL analysts see this as a tough spot for Pittsburgh to be in, with Dubas under immense pressure to make all the right calls.
