The Anaheim Ducks acquired the services of Jacob Trouba, who opted against a possible trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets, as per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
The New York Rangers sparked drama in the NHL with news that Jacob Trouba would be held out of the lineup due to "roster management."
Speculation reigned for hours until the actual trade was completed: he was gone to the Ducks in exchange for Urho Vaakanainen and a draft pick.
Trouba was critical of how the Rangers handled the situation, which started with trade discussions during the offseason. An earlier attempt to trade him to the Detroit Red Wings was nixed when he invoked his modified no-trade clause.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Columbus Blue Jackets also emerged as a potential destination during negotiations, but Trouba declined that trade as well.
Despite their ability to absorb his $8 million-per-year salary without requiring additional cap maneuvering, Trouba rejected the move, leaving the Ducks as the eventual landing spot.
Ultimately, Trouba did waive his no-trade clause to complete the deal to Anaheim, allowing the Rangers to move on from their captain. Notably, the Rangers did not retain any portion of his salary in the trade.
In his absence, the NHL streak of all 32 teams starting the 2024-25 season with a captain reached its end only two months into the season, a further chapter in how captaincy is evolving across the league.
