This season hasn't gone the way the Pittsburgh Penguins would have liked, with the struggles of goaltender Tristan Jarry holding them back from being a genuine contender in the Eastern Conference.
Despite ranking 32nd in GAA, the Penguins remain in the Wild Card race in the East, and now, a surprising one-for-one trade has been suggested that could turn the tides for Pittsburgh as they look to improve in net after a dreadful start behind Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic.
John Gibson of Anaheim, who ranks No. 4 on TSN's trade board, has been a major talking point leading to the trade deadline. Gibson's save percentage of .916 is the highest since 2018-19.
This move would be an absolute godsend for Pittsburgh, who would get a veteran like Gibson to lead them into the playoffs, although they'd then be on the hook for his $6.4 million AAV contract for two years beyond 2024/25.
As for the Ducks, it makes sense to move Gibson now with the emergence of Lukas Dostal as a genuine No. 1 in the NHL, but the question is whether or not they can get a better return for Gibson, with not many teams out there looking for a goaltender being able to take on his deal.
Only time will tell whether or not the Penguins look to make a move with Jarry, as it could give them a genuine shot at making a run, but with the team not having many suitors for the struggling Canadian goaltender, it makes sense that they'd take any deal they can to improve in net.
