NHL teams seemingly universally agreed that today was a good day to place players on waivers as yet another one has hit the wire this afternoon.
This time it is Bruins center Marc McLaughlin, who has been in and out of the lineup but mostly out of it for the team this year.
McLaughlin is on a league-minimum deal, so the Bruins gain a little more than three quarters of a million dollars in cap space with the move.
That gives the team almost exactly one million in cap room to work with, which still isn't much, but it is more than they had yesterday.
That being said, there is a good chance that this move had more to do with basic roster management than it did with cap space.
McLaughlin has appeared in 12 games this season, scoring 2 goals while averaging just over 9 minutes of ice time per game.
It is clear that the organization does not see him as a significant part of the team now or in the future.
This is not surprising as he was never drafted and signed with the Bruins out of college back in 2022.
He has 6 goals in 26 career NHL games and 54 points in 149 career AHL games, all with the Providence Bruins.
Most Bruins fans seem to be largely ambivalent to this move, but it is clear that McLaughlin has his fans within the fanbase as many are arguing that he should still be on the team.
Who knows, perhaps a team will claim him off waivers and he will get a better opportunity somewhere else.
If not, he'll just have to wait for another callup for his next chance to play in the NHL.
