The Calgary Flames are reportedly pushing to acquire a top centre at this trade deadline, but it's another report involving Rasmus Andersson that is perhaps the more surprising report to emerge from Calgary.
Despite suggestions that the team should move their top blue liner, who carries a very cheap $4.5 million salary cap hit for the next year, it appears that's not their plan after all.
According to multiple reports, instead of gauging interest on the 28-year old, the team are now pushing to sign him to an extension, despite being a team that if not for the incredible play of Dustin Wolf, would be one of the worst in the entire NHL.
Many fans of the organization see this move as a major mistake for two big reasons, as the team would be signing a 29-year old to a long-term extension while their window to compete is not even close, and along with that, they have immense talent in the pipeline with the likes of Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz, Etienne Morin and Henry Mews.
While it's certainly easy to say that those players could turn into stars, it's definitely understandable if the organization doesn't want to bank on those players panning out at the NHL level, but given their lack of overall talent, getting assets in return for Andersson would be the best move possible.
Ultimately, only time will tell if the Flames change their mind of whether or not they go through with this, but for now, they're a struggling team that needs future assets, making this potential move a major mistake.
