Jeff Marek breaks cover and finally addresses his viral absence
Sportsnet reporter and host Jeff Marek announced today on social media that he has parted ways with the network.
While this news is undoubtedly sad, it isn't entirely unexpected given recent developments at Sportsnet this summer.
Marek's primary roles at Sportsnet included hosting his own show and co-hosting the «32 Thoughts» podcast with Elliotte Friedman. Typically, these shows take breaks or have reduced schedules during the offseason, but neither has aired since the first night of the 2024 NHL Draft nearly a month ago.
Jeff Marek confirms reports that he is no longer with Sportsnet. In a statement on his private X account, Jeff expressed gratitude towards Sportsnet and his fans, acknowledging their support.
Firstly, thanks for the outpouring of kinds words on Twitter/X. It really means the world to me.
After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I'm moving on. It's been an incredible journey and I'm thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon.
- Jeff
While many of Marek's fans were disheartened by the news, several remain hopeful about his future opportunities. Given his established reputation and name recognition, it's anticipated that he will soon find a new role in the sport we all cherish.
I know your humility won't allow you to acknowledge this, but myself and so many others thought you should've been the next HNIC host.
You represent the gold standard for both coverage in hockey media and the next generation of broadcasters.
Excited to hear what's next for you.
In response, Elliotte Friedman, co-founder of «32 Thoughts» and NHL insider, shared his reflections on Marek's departure. He recounted how Marek joined the podcast and expressed gratitude for their time together, while confirming that the podcast will continue. It appears Friedman may be searching for a new co-host, which could explain the recent absence of episodes.
When we started the podcast, Sportsnet asked if I wanted to do it myself or have a co-host. I liked the idea of playing off someone; @moorescottmoore suggested Jeff Marek.
It was brilliant. Jeff has his loopy suggestions, but they made for fun debates and great moments.
Life throws curveballs at you. I will miss being his teammate, and thank him for being a tremendous co-pilot on the start to our 32 Thoughts podcasting voyage which will continue.
It remains to be seen whether the «32 Thoughts» podcast will transition to a solo format. In the meantime, we wish Jeff Marek the best and look forward to seeing him back in the NHL coverage scene soon.
