On Tuesday, the St. Louis Blues placed Brandon Saad on waivers, and after passing through unclaimed, further developments on Wednesday will likely see him become a free agent immediately.
According to both Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston, the two parties are set to agree on a mutual contract termination, with Saad set to forego the remainder of his deal in St. Louis to become a free agent immediately.
That means that he'll have to go on waivers again on Thursday, but when that happens he'll be an unrestricted free agent, free to sign anywhere in the NHL, something that the Pittsburgh Penguins may need to take a look at.
With the likes of Anthony Beauvillier, Jesse Puljujarvi and others playing key middle-six roles for the team at the moment given their injuries, if they could land a player like Saad, it would give them some solid depth and experience moving forward as they look to get back into the playoff race.
While Saad has just 16 points thus far in 2024/25, he scored 26 goals a season ago with the Blues, so even though there will be plenty of interest in him on the free agent market, the Penguins should be pushing hard to land him for the rest of this season.
Ultimately, if teams like Boston, Edmonton, New York or other contenders come calling, it will be hard for Pittsburgh to outbid them, but if they come with the offer of great playing time and a middle-six role, it could certainly be a great opportunity for the 32-year old.
