Penguins Weigh Trade Options for Veterans Malkin & Letang Amid Retool Plans
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas may be considering offers for veteran players as the team looks to retool.
NHL reporter Dan Rosen revealed today that Kyle Dubas and the Penguins remain interested in a retool rather than a proper rebuild.
As a result, players like Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang may very well remain on the roster going into next season.
As he admits though, the team's hand may be forced if another club comes by with an offer that is simply too good to refuse.
"If a team comes to the Pittsburgh Penguins with a too good to be true offer, they have to consider it. There doesn't appear to be anything imminent, especially with Sidney Crosby. He signed a two-year extension and said he plans to honor it.
The trade value for injured Evgeni Malkin or Kris Letang can't be high. The Penguins are looking to retool and not rebuild." That being said, Makin is currently injured and Kris Letang's contract combined with his age will significantly hurt his trade value.
As a result, it might not be very likely that other clubs will be willing to make an unbelievable offer for either of them.
The Penguins trade deadline won't be quiet, but it will likely be more boring than that.
One player that is seemingly on his way out is Marcus Pettersson, who has been linked to several teams including the Winnipeg Jets.
Rosen shared his thoughts on this situation, noting that Pettersson is among several players the Penguins are likely to trade in the coming weeks.
"There will be teams interested in defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Matt Grzelcyk. Richard Rakell has three years left at $5 million and is having a good season playing with Crosby. Michael Bunting at $4.5 million through next season could interest someone looking for middle-six with term." One could argue that the Penguins would be better off going for a proper rebuild at this moment in time, but if there is no appetite for that from ownership then Kyle Dubas is just going to have to do what he can.
Can he turn things around quickly? We'll have to see.
