The Colorado Avalanche were facing a tough decision this year.
Mikko Rantanen was on an expiring contract and was looking for a big raise this offseason.
As a result, the team had to decide if he was worth that raise or if it would make more sense to trade him before they lost him for nothing in free agency.
Ultimately, they decided for the trade, sending Rantanen to the Hurricanes in a three-way deal.
Apparently, Rantanen was asking for more than the Avs were willing to pay.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Avalanche were prepared to offer the Finish winger around 11.75 million dollars per season, which would have made him the highest-paid winger in the NHL.
He also noted that the team was not willing to offer Rantanen more than Nathan Mackinnon's 12.5 million dollar deal.
Rantanen's current deal comes at a cap hit of 9.25 million dollars, although the Chicago Blackhawks retained 50% of that in the trade.
Rantanen made his season debut for the Hurricanes yesterday, recording 5 shots on goal in just under 19 minutes of ice time but failing to record a point in the 2-3 loss to the Islanders.
Taylor Hall, who was also acquired in the deal, recorded three hits in 11 minutes of ice time and also did not record a point.
The Hurricanes will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit the New York Rangers.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the Hurricanes attempt to re-sign Rantanen this summer, or if this move will end up being a pure rental.
Either way, he will likely be signing one of the largest contracts of the year when that time comes.
