Former NHL champion Esa Tikkanen sells Stanley Cup ring due to legal troubles
Esa Tikkanen, a former player for the Oilers has decided to auction off four of his Stanley Cup rings. This decision comes amidst his troubles regarding tax fraud in Finland.
Known for his time with the 80s Oilers, where he achieved success in the NHL. Tikkanen spent most of his career with this team despite playing for a total of five teams. The auctioning off of four championship rings is seen as a consequence of his battle related to tax fraud.
Tikkanen is auctioning off four of his five championship rings (keeping his first championship ring from 1985).
Although there are speculations linking the auction to his legal issues, Tikkanen has refuted these claims. He mentioned that he had been considering this move for some time now but did not provide a reason for it. According to news sources he asserted that the auction has no connection to his aggravated tax fraud case.
Tikkanen has been in the public eye for his tax fraud charges in recent years. Tikkas is accused of aggravated tax fraud in the district court of Länsi-Uusimaa. According to MTV Urheilu, the main hearing of the case was scheduled for April 23, but it has been postponed, and there is no new date yet.
Is this settlement somehow related to your indictment for aggravated tax fraud? Have there been any financial challenges?
- In no way. This has been thought about for a little longer.
Tikkanen had a long career playing in 877 regular season NHL games with 522 of them being with the Edmonton Oilers. He scored a total of 244 goals and earned 630 points throughout his career. He achieved Stanley Cup victory five times, four of which were with the Oilers. His final championship win was in 1994, with the New York Rangers.
