GM Patrik Allvin has voiced his frustration over the Vancouver Canucks' inability to establish an identity and points toward underperformance by key players such as Elias Pettersson.
With bombastic president Jim Rutherford at the helm of the front office, no option appears off the table as the Canucks look to the New Year, and that includes trading Elias Pettersson, following Patrik Allvin's most recent comments.
Now, it would appear three teams have cropped up as potential landing spots for the 26-year-old star that could be considered his best fit. Adding in Pettersson would go a long way in cements the rebuild for the Detroit Red Wings.
As a long-term, first-line center, he would provide stability and elite playmaking, the cornerstone this young roster needs to drive it up the standings and back into contention, after what has been an absolutely miserable year so far.
The underperforming New York Rangers, relative to expectations, may look at Pettersson as the perfect piece to invigorate their lineup.
Adding a player of that caliber can bolster their offense and perhaps provide the spark they would need to get back on track. With time running out, they will need to do it quick enough to allow themselves to move back up the standings.
Perennial playoff contenders, the Carolina Hurricanes, could use what Pettersson offers: a dynamic scoring center.
His offense would blend nicely with theirs, occasionally conservative and well-balanced, to provide that difference-maker in tight playoff battles. Perhaps he is the final piece they need to finally bring home the Stanley Cup.
It'll be some nervous times ahead for Canuck fans during the next couple of weeks. Considering the frank admission of Allvin and the reputation for making tough choices held by Jim Rutherford, Pettersson's fate could be decided sooner rather than later.
