The Detroit Red Wings have struggled thus far in 2024/25, and with a new coach ushering in a new era, calls have been made for the team to move Patrick Kane.
After years of struggle and an eight-year Stanley Cup Playoffs drought, the expectation around the league was that the Detroit Red Wings could compete for a Stanley Cup spot in 2024/25.
However, with the calendar now turning to 2025, with the team sitting in seventh place in the Atlantic Division, with six points and five teams sitting between themselves and the final Wild Card spot.
Now, https://thehockeynews.com/author/aproteau has named three players that the team could move on from before the NHL trade deadline, with the biggest name of all being Showtime Patrick Kane, who hasn't been at his best thus far in 2024/25.
Kane hasn't had an exceptional season on offense, with only five goals and 14 points in 30 games.
His salary cap hit of $4 million makes him an affordable option for teams seeking depth and playoff experience, and the most he can likely get for Yzerman on the trade block is a mid-tier draft pick or slightly above-average prospect.
It's not a fairytale ending for Kane in Detroit, but considering the poor way things have unfolded for Kane and the Wings, an end to their time together is probably the best way to move forward.
The reasoning behind this from Proteau certainly makes sense, as the team likely aren't going to compete for a spot this season unless things change in a hurry, and if not, Kane could be a big name that nets them a solid prospect or a mid-round draft pick.
In 32 games this season, Kane has 7 goals and 17 points, and despite the fact that he's on a line with his old friend Alex DeBrincat, he simply hasn't rekindled the form that we've seen over the past few years.
After rejoining the Red Wings as a free agent this past summer, this definitely isn't how anyone in Detroit expected things to end, but unless they can get themselves within a few spots of a Wild Card berth in the coming months, expect them to take calls on Kane.
