The New York Rangers have struggled mightily over the last month, and now it appears that Mika Zibanejad may be the next player on the move.
2024/25 started well for the New York Rangers, but after a rough stretch filled with controversy, it appears the team have now quit on their Head Coach, and unless something changes, they could be headed for a disastrous finish to the year.
Earlier reports have stated that star centre Mika Zibanejad wants to remain a New York Ranger, but with the team losing 14 of their last 18 games and falling to last place in the Metropolitan Division, it appears he may be changing his mind.
«We are far from finished with major change for the Rangers,» Friedman said.
In the latest report from Insider David Pagnotta, he reveals that Zibanejad may now be open to a change, although he notes that no official discussions between the two parties has taken place yet.
«Pagnotta reported on Monday that Zibanejad would be open to waiving his NMC for the right environment. It is unclear, however, if #NYR and Zibanejad have discussed which teams he would accept a move to, but that conversation could come if Drury finds the right fit.»
With five years left on his current deal at an AAV of $8.5 Million, it's going to take a massive deal for the Rangers to move Zibanejad if that's the direction they want to go in, with the star forward coming under much scrutiny this season for his lack of effort.
In 36 games, No. 93 has posted 21 points on the season, a major dip in productivity after posting 81, 92 and 72 points over his past three campaigns, and at 31-years of age, it may be a contract that doesn't age very well.
The further that New York fall in the standings however, the more desperate they'll become for a big move, and if somehow moving Zibanejad is the change this team believes they need, expect discussions to ramp up soon.
