The Carolina Hurricanes acquired Mikko Rantanen on Friday, and a top Canucks reporter has now revealed why they pivoted from J.T. Miller after GM Patrik Allvin had an outrageous request in negotiations.

Friday was a chaotic day in the NHL, as the evening saw the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks scrambling to put together a blockbuster deal.

That deal was centred around Mikko Rantanen going to the 'Canes, and although they gave up two solid young players in Martin Necas and Jack Drury, it was a home run move from GM Eric Tulsky.

Now, a report from Vancouver Canucks reporter Rick Dhaliwal has revealed that Carolina were originally looking to get a deal done with Vancouver over J.T. Miller on Friday, but there was one major holdup in negotiations between the two parties.

According to Dhaliwal, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin inquired about the possibility of landing Martin Necas in the deal, but ultimately, he was quickly turned down as the Hurricanes then pivoted to a deal with the Avalanche.

For the Canucks, it makes sense for them to be aggressive in potentially landing a future star like Necas to play in the 2C role for a long time to come, but ultimately, that would likely only be in play in a potential Elias Pettersson deal, with Miller's age and AAV likely working against them in a possible Necas deal.

Ultimately, the blockbuster deal was one that nobody before Friday saw coming, and it's hard to blame Allvin for being aggressive in trying to land a future star in Necas, but now they're down one suitor for Miller, potentially making teams like the New York Rangers even more capable of taking advantage of Vancouver in a potential trade for Miller.
