The reason behind the Toronto Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, signing Alex Nylander has emerged. The move is linked not only to his brother William but also appears to be a strategic decision by GM Brad Treliving.

While Alex Nylander's signing with the Toronto Marlies naturally draws attention because of his connection to Leafs star William Nylander, there's more to the story.
William's presence likely influenced the decision, but a report reveals additional reasons behind Nylander's signing and hints at a possible future role with the main team.
According to The Hockey News, the Maple Leafs are also addressing a lack of forward depth on the main roster.
Nylander, who has NHL experience, may vie for a spot during the Leafs' training camp. Given the speculation about a possible trade involving forward Nick Robertson, the current depth could be further depleted, leaving top prospects Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten's roster chances uncertain.
Alex Nylander could provide an additional option for the team if needed. Even if he doesn't make the NHL roster, he could be a valuable AHL player without occupying an NHL contract slot.
Nylander, a former first-round pick, was chosen eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, matching the draft position of his brother William two years prior.
In the previous season, Nylander netted 11 goals and recorded 15 points in 23 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, following a scoreless stint in 5 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the year.
