This summer is set to be a huge one for the NHL, with Mitch Marner and Mikko Rantanen both set to headline the free agency class, as both are expected to sign huge free agency deals.
According to reports, Colorado have set their own internal limit on how much they're willing to pay Rantanen, and now, TSN's Pierre LeBrun has revealed that Toronto have done the same with their own homegrown superstar.
In 2024/25, Marner has had easily the best year of his career, posting 14 goals and 59 points through 43 games played, putting him on pace to top 100 points for the first time in his fantastic career thus far.
However, it appears Toronto aren't willing to go past $13 million for a new deal with No. 16, who would become only the third player in the NHL over $12.5 million AAV alongside Auston Matthews and Nathan MacKinnon.
That number could be surpassed not once, but twice this off-season, and with Connor McDavid a free agent in 2026, contracts are going to keep going up, but for now, there's a huge decision to be made on Marner.
In his career, Marner has gone over 90 points three times, and has been one of the most consistent regular season players in the NHL, so now teams will need to weigh up whether this years Marner is who he truly is, or if he will top out at an 80-90 point player, as that will decide whether or not he's worth $12.5-13 million or more on the free agency market.
