This past week's '32 Thoughts' podcast featured some updates from host Elliotte Friedman regarding how the General Manager, Kyle Dubas, intends to retool the Pittsburgh Penguins.
One thing very well surmised by all because he has definitely proven to be an analytically-thinking forward-type general manager, is that he's going to get a whole lot younger, or at least really wants to.
Friedman added that Dubas has made it clear he wants to get younger in the Penguins lineup. Even with a core of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang, among others, Dubas knows he needs some young blood mixed in with all that experience.
With a body at every position and a little bit of cap space, the Penguins can move pieces around.
He has been very upfront that he is willing to take on contracts for other teams, but there is a catch. He's all in if the deal involves one thing: young talent ready to make some noise in the NHL.
Friedman specifically mentioned players like recently acquired Philip Tomasino, a promising young forward in the Penguins lineup, as examples of the type of talent Dubas is targeting.
That represents the wider strategy of Dubas to build both for now and into the future. The idea in targeting NHL-ready prospects is to keep the Penguins competitive during the playoff race while also building for longer-term success.
The way Dubas operates, it may very well be that a new era dawns for the Penguins, in which youth, opportunity, and fresh perspectives drive the team forward.
