Colton Parayko emerges as a top target defenseman for the Maple Leafs
As the 2024-25 NHL season draws near, the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the hunt for defensive upgrades, and recent reports have linked them to two prominent defensemen:
Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues and Shea Theodore of the Vegas Golden Knights. The Leafs' search for additional defensive prowess continues, even after their recent acquisition of Chris Tanev.

Chris Tanev, signed 6x$4.5M by TOR, is a high-end defence-first veteran defenceman who combines stabilizing play in his own end with excellent puck-moving skill. Sacrifices the body to block shots and plays through pain. Was terrific in the 2024 playoffs. #LeafsForever
With Tanev's signing solidifying part of the Leafs' defense, the team is not resting on its laurels. The need for further defensive reinforcement remains evident, and new insights from NHL insider David Pagnotta have put Colton Parayko under the spotlight.
David Pagnotta's latest on Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive targets
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period recently included Parayko in his list of top trade targets. Placed 18th on the list, Parayko's name has been a frequent subject in trade talks. His potential acquisition, however, would necessitate a considerable trade offer and his own approval, given his full no-trade clause.
Parayko's name continues to swirl around the trade winds, as it has for the last two seasons. He has a full NTC and five more years left on his contract. It'll take a big deal, and his approval, to make something happen, but the Blues are exploring their options
Standing at 6'6" and 31 years old, Parayko is known for his imposing defensive play and physicality. His offensive contributions peaked with a 35-point season. Despite his solid credentials, the Leafs may also be considering Shea Theodore as a viable alternative.
The Golden Knights want to keep Theodore in the fold, but teams are starting to call and inquire about his availability, primarily due to how tight Vegas is up against the cap. Theodore has another year left on his contract and Vegas has a lot of holes to fill. Moving him would create cap space.
Theodore, 29, stands out with his offensive capabilities, having recorded 42 points in 47 games last season. Given the Leafs' current roster, which now includes Tanev for defensive solidity, Theodore's offensive edge could address a key area of need for Toronto.
As the offseason progresses, the Maple Leafs face a crucial decision: whether to pursue Parayko's defensive might or Theodore's offensive flair. Both options present unique advantages, and their final choice could significantly impact their performance for the upcoming season.
