He had a woeful performance in the season opener against the New York Rangers, letting in six goals on 40 shots for a putrid .850 save percentage. Since then, he's been on the bench, watching Joel Blomqvist take his place for the last two games.
Jarry's grip on the No. 1 goalie spot feels loose right now, especially with Alex Nedeljkovic waiting to come back from injury. It wasn't long ago that Jarry signed a five-year deal in 2023, at $5.38 million AAV but that contract isn't buying him much extra patience. Last season, he lost the starting job for the final 13 games, and this year isn't off to a great start either.
It appears a goalie competition is brewing in Pittsburgh. Ideally, the Penguins need Jarry to find his form. One bad game doesn't define a season, but it's clear his contract won't guarantee him the lion's share of starts if things keep heading south.
Tonight's game is another chance for Jarry to reclaim his spot, but if struggles continue, he could be facing the AHL before long.
