Tragically, a violent crime claimed the life of 29-year-old Janne Puhakka. The young player was formerly a member of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the QMJHL.

Despite playing for Team Finland at the world juniors and having two fantastic seasons in the QMJHL, Janne Puhakka never made it to the NHL. But as the first openly gay skater to ever compete in Finland's top league, LIIGA, where many former NHL players have played, he had a significant influence on the sport.
No openly gay player has ever played in the NHL as of yet, but Luke Prokop, a 6' 6 Nashville Predators top prospect who was chosen in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft, is on his way.
Tragically, Janne Puhakka passed away at the young age of 29, allegedly at the hands of his 66-year-old veterinarian partner, Rolf Nordmo.
The detective in charge of the investigation, Matti Högman, said the following (in English):
THE POLICE are investigating a suspected m****r in Henttaa, Espoo.

According to IS information, the (crime) took place on Sunday evening at the property where ex-hockey player Janne Puhakka , 29, and his partner, Norwegian veterinarian Rolf Nordmo , 66, live. [...] The police will not confirm the identities of the parties involved.

ALTHOUGH it's only been less than a day [...] the police have a good idea of the course of events.

- We have a reasonably good understanding of what has happened, crime commissioner, head of investigation Matti Högman tells Ilta-Sanom.

- But, of course, we only suspect and the investigation is in the early stages, Högman says.

The police suspect that the act was particularly brutal and cruel. In addition, the police suspect that there was sound judgment in the act.

- We suspect sound judgment and a particularly raw and cruel way of doing things, Högman tells Ilta-Sanom.

We hope justice is served for Janne Puhakka's family and friends. To a true hockey pioneer, may you rest in peace.
