The Pittsburgh Penguins have started poorly this season, but that may not mean they'll tear it all down and start completely from scratch.
The past few days have no doubt been a whirlwind for fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins, as it all started with their historic 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Stars. Since that point, rumours have been flying about their future, and after the team moved Lars Ellerto the Washington Capitals, the belief was that this was the beginning of a fire sale.
However, according to Taylor Haase of DK Pittsburgh Sports, that may not be the case after all.
«Taylor Haase thinks that until Crosby retires, Dubas doesn't plan to completely dismantle and rebuild the roster.
Haase claims that the goal of any upcoming trades will be to acquire players to help them try to win with Crosby rather than draft picks or prospects.»
While this isn't surprising, it may be a little disappointing for Penguins fans, as the belief around the NHL is that this team needs to tear it down completely to build up a roster around the young talent that they already have.
On the other hand, Sidney Crosby is one of the greatest players we've ever seen in the NHL, and to have the final two years of his career wasted by gaining draft picks for the future would be highly disappointing as well.
This puts General Manager Kyle Dubas in a very tough spot, as he has to balance prioritizing the future while also finding ways to win while Crosby remains at a very high level, making his one of the toughest jobs in the NHL right now.
If things get worse, Dubas' hand ultimately may be forced, but for now, expect some smaller moves of players like Drew O'Connor and Marcus Petterson, but if their record continues to get worse, we may see the likes of Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson on the move.
