There are currently three teams in the NHL who could make sense as trade destinations for Penguins defenseman Kris Letang.
With the Penguins seemingly finally heading into a proper rebuild, there are many questions surrounding their top players including Letang. How much longer will these staples of Penguins hockey actually remain in the city? How many of them will be traded? Will those trades come this year or next?
Letang, a Montreal native, has previously been linked to the Canadiens. Reports from earlier this year indicated that he expressed interest in a trade to Montreal. Clearly, nothing came from that rumor, but perhaps it would be more accurate to say that nothing has come from it so far.
After all, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas recently revealed that everyone outside of Sidney Crosby is available for trade.
The Canadiens have a long history of acquiring French-Canadian players whether they come from the draft, free agency, or via trade. As such, they will always be in consideration if trade rumors around Letang heat up.
Another team that could have interest in the 37-year-old blueliner would be the Boston Bruins. The team has regressed massively this season, suddenly falling out of the playoff picture. The team already has well over 20 million dollars committed to their top-four though thanks to the addition of Nikita Zadorov this summer.
Letang's 6.1 million dollar cap hit presents a serious problem for the Bruins. That being said, their top defenseman this season have not been particularly impressive anywhere on the ice, but particularly in the offensive zone. Hampus Lindholm leads the team's blueliners with just 7 points. Granted, Letang himself only has 6 points, but we all know what he is capable of.
Finally, we have the Edmonton Oilers, who have been rumored to be looking to upgrade on defense. One name that has been linked to the club is Chicago's Seth Jones, but would he really be that big of an upgrade? Letang is not exactly known for his stellar defensive play, but neither is Jones and Letang has a longer track record of finding ways to put the puck in the back of the net, which is Oilers hockey 101.
Regardless of what happens next, it is bound to be a tumultuous time for Letang and his teammates. If and when he is moved we will have that news for you right here so be sure to stay tuned and look for updates coming out of Pittsburgh.
