There are several reports that Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins is on the trade block, but Elliotte Friedman runs down why it won't be easy for GM Kyle Dubas
As the 2024-25 NHL regular season goes on, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has some huge decisions to make. That includes whether he should hang on to key names to make a run at the postseason, or start preparing now for what appears to be an inevitable rebuild.
There is sure to be interst in several Pens players, especially from teams already in a contending position. However, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said defenceman Kris Letang will be a difficult one to move.
"Kris Letang has a no-move for three more seasons. Even if he wished for a new address, it's not going to be easy. No one disrespects Letang, fiercely prideful and determined.
But his history of injuries and ailments make trading for the 37-year-old a gamble. And, it is difficult to know exactly how it all works, but NHL contracts can be uninsurable for pre-existing conditions. That's a worry with him."
Also standing in the way of a Kris Letang trade is his $6.1 million cap hit that doesn't end until 2028. Because of that, Letang is not a rental player. Teams willing to take him on will have to consider that he will get his money until he turns 40.
It's a very tough spot for Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas to be in. The team can't continue to sputter along like it is without something changing. If Dubas doesn't do things right, he may end up being the change the Penguins make.
