Penguins Top Scorer to Potentially Replace Golden Knights Injured Forward in 4-Nations Face Off
One of the Penguin's top scorers this season could be in line to represent Sweden next month after another forward suffered an injury.
The Vegas Golden Knights announced today that forward William Karlsson has been placed on injured reserve.
The team also announced a corresponding move, calling up two prospects to replace the veteran.
Unfortunately, this injury could not come at a much worse time for Karlsson as he was set to represent Sweden during the Four-Nations tournament set for February 12th-20th.
Elliotte Friedman noted in today's episode of 32 thoughts that this injury could potentially prevent Karlsson from participating in the event.
"Now there is concern that whatever lingering injury is bothering William Karlsson could cause him to miss the Four Nations Face-Off. We should get clarity soon. Hopefully, everything works out for him."
That being said, if Karlsson can't go, that would open the door for another deserving player to have the honor of representing their country.
The Hockey Writer reporter Kelsey Surmacz aptly notes that this could be Penguins leading goal-scorer Rickard Rakell.
She accurately points out that Rakell probably deserved to make the team even without the injury to Karlsson, pointing to his points production this season.
"Many across the hockey world thought Rakell should have been on Team Sweden's roster in the first place. And it's hard to argue with what the Penguins' sniper and leading goal-scorer has done this season.
Rakell has 40 points in 48 games on the season and is currently tied for 11th in the NHL in goals with 23. Only two Swedish players - William Nylander (28) and Adrian Kempe (24), who are both on Team Sweden's roster - have more goals than Rakell, and only five of Rakell's goals have come on the power play." We should get more information on Karlsson's status in the coming days, and hopefully, we will learn whether or not he will participate in the tournament.
Either way, stay tuned as we wait for that announcement.
