Kyle Dubas Addresses Pittsburgh Penguins Fire Sale as Deadline Approaches
The Pittsburgh Penguins' President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas addressed the recent rumors of the fire sale, with the trade deadline looming.
In a recent report, Marco D'Amico wrote that the Pittsburgh Penguins were looking to offload many contracts that were deemed untouchables in the past, such as those of Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang.
Here's what he wrote:
"An NHL source close to the situation has confirmed to RG that everyone on the current roster - except captain Sidney Crosby, longtime alternate captain Evgeni Malkin, veteran forward Ryan Rust, forward Philip Tomasino, and defenseman Owen Pickering - is available for the right price before the March 7 NHL Trade Deadline.
- Marco D'Amico" In a new development, Dubas debunked those rumors, saying that rumors of a "fire sale" are inaccurate.
Indeed, he reiterated in a recent interview that he wants his team to get younger by adding prospects and picks to help the team in the future, and he is willing to retain money on contracts, but isn't telling teams that everything must go:
"I think every team in the league knows what we're trying to achieve. As our actions have shown from last March on, we're trying to bring in younger NHL players.
We're trying to bring in prospects, and we're trying to bring in draft picks, with the goal being to quickly develop those assets into people that can help the core group of the team here win one more time and then set the team up for the long-range future. We're not going to stray from that."
"But to say that it's a fire sale, and we're willing to retain money on very long-term deals - you know, I understand how that stuff starts to get out and take on a life of its own, but it's not accurate.
So, we've had lots of conversations. But, are we telling teams that everything must go? No, we're not."
With just over six weeks before the trade deadline, fans are eager to see what will happen in the organization. Meanwhile, we'll keep you updated on all rumors and possible scenarios that could go down in Pittsburgh.
