After departing from the Pittsburgh Penguins, experienced forward Phil Kessel has remained active with 290 straight games and clinching another Stanley Cup victory in 2023. However he has not hit the ice since then. Despite maintaining his Iron Man streak of playing 1,064 games, Kessel's future in the NHL remains uncertain.
With doubts surrounding his future in the NHL, Kessel still harbors a desire to continue playing hockey. The emergence of a new hockey league could potentially provide him with the opportunity to do so.
With aspirations to establish itself as an entity in the world of sports, Major League Hockey (MLH) is gearing up for its debut in fall 2024. The league is on the lookout for standout players to generate interest and credibility.
During an episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that he was informed that Kessel would be, among the targets to gauge interest if they were involved with launching this league.
This type of league seems like it aligns well with what Kessel enjoys. The 3-on-3 system will mean the games defense isn't a priority, and the league aims for weekend matches and a convenient travel plan.
As per the MLH website, every team will feature three standout players with hockey background globally. The MLH has selected 16 cities in the US and Canada for team locations, with no cities in Pennsylvania thus far.
