New York Rangers Linked to Two Defensemen, According to Peter Baugh of The Athletic
Nothing has gotten better for the New York Rangers since trading away their captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks . While they freed up valuable cap space, the results on the ice haven't been there.
Last night, in a poor effort, the Rangers lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, who are dead last in the NHL standings.
At the end of the game, Rangers fans showed their frustration by booing the team off the ice.
In his post-game press conference, head coach Peter Laviolette commented on the situation, saying they deserved it:
«It's frustrating. I get it. Deservedly so. When your pace should be at a higher level and execution should be at a higher level, I get it. It's frustration.»
The Rangers appear poised to make changes ahead of the trade deadline, and Peter Baugh revealed that two defensemen could help the team get back on the right track.
He wrote in a recent article that Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets could be targeted by the Rangers' general manager Chris Drury on the trade market.
In his own words:
"The Columbus Blue Jackets' Ivan Provorov is the top name on colleague Chris Johnston's trade big board. He is capable of playing big minutes, averaging 23:19 per game over his nine-year career, but could cost a first-round pick to acquire. New York played against another feasible trade target Friday.
The Pittsburgh Penguins' Marcus Pettersson averages 22:23 of ice time per night and can play with skilled players. He and Chris Kreider got into it after the defenseman tripped Braden Schneider into the boards, but they would surely make amends if on the same team.
Both Provorov and Pettersson have cap hits of over $4 million, which New York can now easily fit with Trouba's contract off the books." This season, Provorov, 27, scored 10 points in 27 games with the Blue Jackets and has a +6 rating.
As for Pettersson, he has 13 points with a -6 rating in 29 games for the Penguins.
It'll be interesting to see if the Rangers make a move soon considering that they're only two points away from being in the last spot of the Metropolitan Division.
