This season hasn't been going the way the Montreal Canadiens would have liked, and with the calendar now turning to December, they are already being seen as a big time seller at the trade deadline.
While most of the players on their team currently are here for the future, they do have some veterans of value, with one being Mike Matheson, a talented defenseman who is ready to play on a win-now team in 2024/25.
Now, Oilers insider Jim Matheson has linked him to the Oilers, stating that he would be a perfect fit for the Stanley Cup contenders with a major hole currently on their blue line.
This isn't the first time that we've seen a connection between Matheson and the Oilers, as his experience and versatility make him the perfect fit in Edmonton as they chase a Stanley Cup.
A year ago, Matheson tallied a career high in points with 62, and while he wouldn't be asked to do too much heavy lifting in Edmonton, he would certainly be a fit on the second pairing alongside Darnell Nurse.
It's unclear at this point what a team would need to give up to land Matheson, as prices tend to go up towards the trade deadline, but given the amount of teams looking to land defensemen, the Canadiens may have a valuable piece on their hands.
While Matheson has been a great player for Montreal, the team just aren't ready to contend, so whether it's Edmonton, Florida or another contending team, expect him to be on the way out in the coming months.
