After a few years of dominating the Metropolitan Division, the New York Rangers are going through a rough patch. They lost six of their last seven games and boast a 13-10-1 record.
They achieved something great last season when they won the Presidents' Trophy with Peter Laviolette as head coach. Unfortunately, they've been struggling with consistency this year, and many changes loom for the organization.
Some key players are expected to hit the trade block at some point in the coming months such as Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider.
Other reports stated that the team could be looking to make a coaching change before that happens.
The analyst Marco D'Amico revealed that a source told him that Laviolette's days in New York could be counted, and confirmed the controversial candidate to replace him behind the Rangers' bech: Joel Quenneville.
Quenneville hasn't worked in the NHL since being fired as the Florida Panthers head coach in the 2021-22 season following the Kyle Beach scandal. But after Gary Bettman authorized his return to the League last summer, he could make a comeback soon.
However, he also has a great coaching reputation. He knows what it takes to win in this League. He's been working in the NHL since 1994 and won three Stanley Cups.
If General Manager Chris Drury ends up taking this route, he'll need to address the controversy head-first to avoid backlash from the fans and media.
