Many believe that Jake Evans could be a name on the trade block in Montreal this season, but now a top insider has revealed an extension may be the likely outcome.
The Montreal Canadiens are all of a sudden one of the hottest teams in the NHL, and with the team currently sitting in a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot, any outcome for the 2024/25 season is now on the table.
However, this doesn't mean that personnel decisions become any easier, with the team needing to make big calls on some key players, including Jake Evans, who will hit free agency this summer.
While the belief around the league was that he could be traded at the deadline for a solid asset, the story has now change, with well connected insider Renaud Lavoie claiming that the two parties could reach an agreement on an extension in the very near future.
I don't know when, I don't know the date, but there's a wedding coming up to make sure Jake stays in the organization.
Not only that, but Lavioe has suggested that this could come with a major pay bump for Evans, who has impressed mightily this season as he's on pace for a career high with 10 goals and 23 points through 39 games thus far.
The salary cap is going to continue to go up. There are still people who say in two years it will be $100 million. Over three years, if you give Evans $1.5 million more, nobody is going to cry.
At 28-years of age, Evans still has some very productive years ahead of him, and given the talented young core the Canadiens have assembled in recent times, it makes sense to keep someone solid like Evans around.
There's still plenty of time left in the season for things to change for better or worse in Montreal, but for now it appears they're ready to reward a very hard-working young forward as they look to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
