The Edmonton Oilers were reportedly interested in Tyson Barrie, but in a surprising twist, he signed a PTO with their rivals, the Calgary Flames.

This decision has caught many off guard, given the Oilers' connection to Barrie and his recent free agency status.
Tyson Barrie, a name that has been circulating in free agency discussions, made an unexpected choice to pursue a PTO with Calgary. The 33-year-old defenseman faced limited options despite various reports of interest, but the Flames' current need for depth on the blue line, especially with questions surrounding Mackenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson, presented an opportunity. Barrie's decision to sign with Calgary could be a strategic move to secure playing time and enhance his market value.
From the Flames' perspective, this move is a significant coup, as they have managed to bring in a player who was previously on the radar of their arch-enemy, the Oilers. Last season, Barrie notched 15 points in 41 games, and Calgary will be hoping he can improve those numbers in the 2024/25 season.
If Barrie performs well, he could become a valuable trade asset by the deadline, particularly with promising prospects like Hunter Brzustewicz, Zayne Parekh, and Jeremie Poirier making their way through the Flames' system. The future looks promising for Calgary's blue line, and Barrie's signing appears to be a short-term move with potential long-term benefits for both parties involved.
In the 2022/23 season, Barrie played for both Edmonton and Nashville, recording 13 goals and 55 points in 72 games. While his market value has decreased in recent times, a strong start with Calgary could reignite interest in him as the trade deadline approaches, making this PTO a pivotal moment in Barrie's career.
In 809 regular-season games, Barrie has accumulated 505 points with 109 goals and 396 assists. Additionally, he has contributed two goals and 19 assists in 47 postseason games.
