Pierre LeBrun of 'The Athletic' has mentioned that the Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson could be a trade target for either the Carolina Hurricanes or Colorado Avalanche, but only if Anaheim agrees to retain as much as 50% of his $6.4 million annual cap hit that runs through 2026-27.
Such a move would drop Gibson's cap hit to $3.2 million, perhaps making him attractive to teams looking to add depth in goal.
Despite having had early-season emergency surgery, Gibson appears to be back in full form.
As former NHL netminder Jamie McLennan contributed, with raw talent like Gibson's, a fresh start can help him get back to form in the right system.
Of course, as potential suitors, the Hurricanes seem more logical considering their long-term health concerns with Frederik Andersen.
LeBrun says Carolina has kicked the tires on Gibson internally, believing their structure would get him back to elite form.
To the Hurricanes, he could be the answer to years of playoff goaltending woes.
Any trade, though, would seemingly require the Hurricanes to be willing to meet the Ducks' ask.
The Avalanche, while also linked to Gibson, seem a less likely landing spot.
Though Colorado has struggled defensively and boasts the worst goals-against record in the league, the Avalanche brass is reportedly confident in Alexandar Georgiev and their current tandem.
Adding Gibson's term would also strain an already tight salary cap, making a deal with the Avalanche unlikely.
Should Gibson be looking for a fresh start, and Anaheim is open to retaining salary, Carolina would have the upper hand should they decide to pull the trigger.
