Elliotte Friedman suggests the Toronto Maple Leafs seek a win-win outcome regarding Mitch Marner, to avoid repeating their past decision, similar to Nazem Kadri.

One of the storylines to monitor this offseason will be Mitch Marner's status, with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The standout player will be eligible to negotiate a contract extension starting July 1st as he approaches the year of his $10,903,000 annual contract.
It's no secret that any NHL team would welcome having Mitch Marner as part of their lineup due to his skill set and being in the prime of his career.
Nonetheless according to insider Elliotte Friedman, there is no urgency on the part of the Maple Leafs to rush into any decisions regarding Marner. Hinting that a resolution may not come until later in the season, similar to what happened with William Nylander's contract negotiations.
Elliotte Friedman weighed in on Mitch Marner's situation by stating;
"Elliotte Friedman on the ongoing Mitch Marner situation:

«Don't be surprised if Marner's situation plays out over the next season in Toronto.»

The delicate negotiations between player and team aim for a win-win, with the Leafs seeking a beneficial trade or strategic use of cap space. Concerns include fan reactions if Marner remains unsigned and a trade based on emotions like the Kadri trade a few seasons ago, which the Leafs do not want to repeat. They fear Marner could thrive as a great player in a quieter market.

«If the contract demands on both sides are crazy, it could lead to a divorce. But on June 2nd, I'm not certain that Marner will be traded.»"

Brad Treliving is keen on learning from errors such as those involving Nazem Kadri and Matthew Tkachuk.

The Leafs are determined not to replicate trades like the one involving Nazem Kadri. Where he declined a move to the Calgary Flames and then GM Kyle Dubas proceeded with a deal resulting in Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot and a 6th round draft pick being acquired before Kadri experienced success, with Colorado in subsequent years.
With Marner's no-movement clause and challenging salary, Treliving faces pressure to avoid repeating the Kadri situation in Toronto and the Huberdeau-Tkachuk trade in Calgary, considered one of the worst in recent years.
Do you think the Maple Leafs would err by waiting until after the summer to trade Mitch Marner?
