The Boston Bruins' rebuild talks heated up as team captain Brad Marchand was at the center of a massive rumor sending him to join a fellow Nova Scotian superstar.

Following a tough start to the season, the Boston Bruins made the surprising decision to fire their head coach Jim Montgomery instead of starting a rebuild process.

For a while, things were better in Boston under interim head coach Joe Sacco, but unfortunately for the B's fans, the team has barely been able to keep a .500 winning percentage in January.

With struggles on the ice come uncertainty surrounding the future of core players in Boston, such as Brad Marchand, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.

In a recent paper for The Athletic, we learned that trading Marchand would make sense for the player and the team.

However, it also warned us about the fact that Marchand, who's 36 years old, has a lot of wear and tear and it's difficult to see when he'll slow down on the ice:

"Dealing Marchand has merit, both for the player and the franchise. Given the 36-year-old's full-gas style, injury history, and 1,079 games of wear and tear, it's difficult to project when Marchand will hit the wall."

If the Bruins end up not making it to the playoffs and management is afraid that Marchand will walk away for nothing after the season, trading the captain before the deadline would be a low-risk option for Don Sweeney.

If this happens, LeBrun believes Marchand could be opened to be traded to a top contender team, such as the Colorado Avalanche, where plays his friend and fellow Nova Scotian superstar Nathan MacKinnon:

"If Sweeney progresses to a dealmaking degree, it's possible he could consult with Marchand on a preferred destination. Marchand has a young family. He has partial no-trade protection. But Marchand might welcome a Stanley Cup chase in Colorado with good friend and fellow Nova Scotian Nathan MacKinnon."

In the end, it's hard to say if Marchand would even agree to play for another team, as he spent his whole career in Boston and is a loyal guy.

It wouldn't be surprising to see him accept a lower salary to remain in Boston, like Patrice Bergeron and Sidney Crosby did in recent years.
