The Anaheim Ducks reportedly offered Cam Fowler, one of their top defensemen, to the New York Rangers in the Jacob Trouba trade, but it was rejected for a simple reason.
Friedman stated that both Fowler and his organization wanted this deal to happen, but financial reasons forced the Rangers to decline.
Read Friedman's declaration here:
"I heard that Anaheim wanted Fowler in this deal. I have no doubt Fowler wanted to be in this deal. It's been out there: he wants to be traded, he wants to play for a contender. I never heard Vatrano's name in it, but I did hear Fowler's.
At the end of the day, they couldn't get it done. I think one of the reasons is New York wanted the flexibility for both this year and next."
The Rangers wanted to free cap space by getting rid of Trouba's $8 million AAV contract. It wouldn't have made sense for them to add Fowler and his $6.5 million AAV deal, even if it expires after the 2025-26 season.
Instead of Fowler, the Rangers got Urho Vaakanainen, a 25-year-old Finnish defenseman, currently signed to a one-year, $1.1 million AAV contract set to end at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The Rangers and the Ducks will both be in action tonight. New York will be in Chicago to face the Blackhawks, while Anaheim will be in Montreal to face the Canadiens.
