The NHL's trade deadline is less than two months away, and while we're yet to get a blockbuster deal that changes the NHL landscape, the trades are now beginning to roll in.
On Wednesday, TSN's Darren Dreger confirmed a trade between Central Division rivals involving prospects Isaak Phillips and Dmitry Kuzmin swapping teams.
In the deal, 23-year old Isaak Phillips, who was a former fifth-round draft pick will head to the Winnipeg Jets after showing some promise with the Blackhawks over the past three years.
In 56 games played at the NHL level, he's tallied 2 goals and 12 assists, and with the Jets looking for more NHL ready blue liners, it made sense for them to take a chance on the 6-foot-3 defenseman that has the potential to be a bottom four defenseman at the NHL level.
The Blackhawks will then receive former third-round pick Dmitry Kuzmin, who has yet to make a major adjustment to the professional game, as he has just 1 goal and 4 points in 21 games played for the AHL's Manitoba Moose this season.
At 21-years of age, Kuzmin is just a few years removed from posting 59 points in 65 games for the OHL's Flint Firebirds, so while he's yet to make that adjustment to the AHL game, it's safe to say that the future is very bright for Kuzmin, and now he's in a team where he'll likely get a much bigger opportunity.
Ultimately, this was a solid deal for both teams, as the Jets get someone more NHL ready with question marks over their blue line, while Chicago get another young player with future potential, so we will see how things play out for this deal in the coming years.
