Pittsburgh Penguins Preparing for Multiple Trades as Kyle Dubas Expected to Make Bold Moves
The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly close to making several moves ahead of the March 7th trade deadline.
The Penguins are in a tough spot this year as they once again have rallied back from a poor start to the season.
Their chances of making the playoffs are still slim, but still a real possibility. They've have strong games in the two first periods but have somehow made a disaster out of them in the third.
That being said, it would still likely be better for the long term health of the team to make a few moves at the deadline. Earlier today it was announced that the Penguins would be placing veteran goaltender Tristan Jarry on Waivers.
More likely than not, the team will be sellers according to the Athletic's Josh Yohe.
"League sources expect the Penguins to make multiple deals. Marcus Pettersson is as good as gone, but don't be shocked if other veterans are included. A league source said «no one is safe» on the Penguins, except players with full no-trade clauses, such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin." The full list of Penguins will full no move clauses is as follows; Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Bryan Rust, and Erik Karlsson.
As such, we can probably assume that none of them will be moved, even though Karlsson's name has come up at times earlier in the year.
One position Yohe seems to think a move is particularly likely is in goal.
Alex Nedelkjovic has been has been straight up bad this season while Tristan Jarry has been unplayable.
Meanwhile, goalie prospect Joel Blomqvist was great when he was called up earlier in the season to fill in on an injury basis.
"Joel Blomqvist enjoyed a fabulous stint in the NHL earlier this season, clearly outplaying Jarry and Nedeljkovic before returning to Wilkes-Barre. He's been solid in the NHL, showcasing a .912 save percentage and a 2.93 GAA."
Both Jarry and Ned are probably negative value assets at this point in their careers but someone needs to get moved in order to make room for the next generation of Penguins netminders.
If they got .912 goaltending all season, the Penguins would very likely be a playoff contender despite their other flaws.
That being said, the Penguins can't change the past, they can only look forward to the future. Be sure to keep an eye on the team as the March 7th trade deadline approaches.
