After not landing a new NHL contract this past off-season, many wondered if former All-Star John Klingberg would have a future in the league following an injury riddled campaign with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In fact, little was heard from the veteran after he went on Injured Reserve early in the season with Toronto, but now, whispers of a return have become louder as it appears he will take to the ice in 2024/25.
For what team that will take place is currently unknown, but according to TSN's Darren Dreger, there are three very intriguing Canadian contenders that are all looking at the 32-year old as a possible pickup, with all three expecting to be genuine contenders for the Stanley Cup.
He also adds:
That report was backed up by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who revealed that the Swedish defenseman has been working in Toronto to make a comeback, noting that several contenders believe he'd be a great addition ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
While his 2023/24 campaign in Toronto didn't go as well as everyone had hoped, Klingberg tallied nine straight seasons of 30 or more points before that, averaging an impressive 45 points per season while posting 67 in his All-Star campaign in 2017/18.
After suffering a major hip injury that derailed his season with the Maple Leafs, it's unclear just how much he's got left in the tank, but as a possibly cheap option as the trade deadline draws near, it's safe to say that this could be a homerun pickup for any of those teams.
