The NHL to reach a verdict on four players implicated in the 2018 WJC scandal
The NHL faces a dilemma as four of the five players involved in the 2018 WJC scandal approach restricted free agency, leaving teams uncertain about the NHL's next move.
During the season five members of the 2018 Team Canada World Junior Championship squad were accused of some serious crimes. While their legal proceedings are pending, Carter Hart, Cal Foote, Michael McLeod and Dillon Dube, are set to become restricted free agents this summer. The NHL must make a decision on whether teams can retain their rights without offering qualifying contracts.
"Right now, the Flyers, Flames and Devils are in limbo. If pressed, they are all unlikely to issue qualifying offers to retain the rights of these players. However, the judicial process has not yet begun, and all four have proclaimed their innocence through barristers and are owed due process. All [three] teams are hoping that the NHL will step in and take the issue out of their hands, which could allow the teams to retain their rights without the need for qualifying offers pending the judicial process and, of course, any potential league discipline that might follow." - Frank Seravalli
The NHL has a month to determine if teams can keep players rights without making qualifying offers amounting to $9 million, for the four players with expiring contracts.
We'll have to wait for an announcement from the NHL regarding whether teams can retain these players rights until the legal process is concluded.
