This season has gone from great to bad to even worse for the New York Rangers, and it all started with a report leaking from the front office that veterans Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba were on the trade block.
Since that point, General Manager Chris Drury has traded Trouba and young forward Kaapo Kakko, and while some believe that Kreider's future remains in New York, that may not be so certain anymore.
Now, the team have taken another step towards potentially making a blockbuster move, as they have made Kreider a healthy scratch for their matchup with the New Jersey Devils.
This season, Kreider has just 11 goals and 12 points in 30 games played, but in December it's been worse, as he has just 2 goals in 10 games played with the speculation seemingly getting to him.
While the team have picked up a few wins as of late, they continue to struggle, and if getting an asset or two in return for Kreider can help spark the team, it's something that a ruthless organization like the Rangers could do.
This could simply be a way for the Rangers to get Kreider off the ice and in a better mental state, but given all of the talk over the past month, it's hard to ignore the possibility that it could be something more.
Ultimately, with the rosters frozen until after the holidays, nothing can happen over the next few days, but given that the team could want Kreider to stay healthy for a potential trade, this is a situation to keep an eye on moving forward.
