This summer, the Edmonton Oilers finally let go of Ken Holland after years of failing to assemble a Stanley Cup-winning team around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Holland was immediately linked to a new position in Columbus shortly after leaving Edmonton, but his NHL future appeared to be in doubt now that Don Waddell has taken over.
However, that might not last long, though, as leading NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has disclosed that if Holland is unable to secure a position with a particular team, another one will be prepared for him.
According to Friedman's most recent 32 Thoughts piece, Holland has been approached by NHL Hockey Operations about a possible role with the league; although the specifics are still unknown, it would be a significant role for the seasoned player.
Holland, who is 68 years old, has played a significant role in the development of both the Oilers and the Detroit Red Wings' teams. During his long tenure in the Motor City, he served as general manager for three Stanley Cups. But after taking over a roster that included Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, he was unable to advance them, and after only one Stanley Cup Finals appearance during his five-year tenure, it was time to let him go.
Nevertheless, Holland is considered to be among the best hockey minds, and considering his clout in the league, it seems inevitable that he will eventually take on a new role.
