The season's first meeting between the Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets took place on the ice at Little Caesars Arena last night. Following their season-opening loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, Winnipeg was hoping to jump back on to their winning ways.
Kyle Connor's 3 points and the offensive output of nine other Jets players helped the Jets defeat the Red Wings 6-2 in spectacular fashion.
The Jets had what appeared to be a flawless night, but their performance was marred by a minor incident at their bench. After the Red Wings scored a powerplay goal in the second period, Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel completely lost it all about halfway through the game.
It all began when Dylan Samberg was sent off for interfering with a contentious play.
Arniel lost it at the bench when Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin scored a goal in the next few minutes. He was obviously upset with the way things had gone and yelled at the referees and players.
The team's recently acquired top line, which consists of Gabriel Vilardi, Mark Scheifele, and Kyle Connor, has been incredibly effective, enabling them to defeat the NHL's top players.
Coming off a Vezina Trophy-winning season, Connor Hellebuyck has made a huge difference. He has played eight games and has an incredible save percentage of .923. The Winnipeg Jets, who signed him to a seven-year, $8.5 million-per-year contract, are grateful to have him because he is an example of elite consistency. It's amazing how far he's come as a former NAHL player and fifth-round pick.
One of the most exciting stretches of hockey we have witnessed in Winnipeg since they returned was Scott Arniel's historic run as head coach, which saw the Jets start 8-0-0 as a new head coach (with the franchise). When the playoffs roll around, it will truly matter if the team can maintain this amazing rhythm.
