Today, a recent report from Elliotte Friedman has disclosed that a new business deal by the Washington Capitals is poised to impact 23 NHL teams.
In recent days, the Washington Capitals finalized a deal to acquire the popular NHL contract website CapFriendly. The site, which tracked contracts, buyouts, and various salary cap-related matters, also offered a range of user tools.
It won't happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website
In addition, Elliotte Friedman revealed that 23 NHL teams relied on CapFriendly as their primary resource for contract management. Consequently, these teams will now need to either find an alternative public source or develop their own system.
Friedman names teams that have something when CapFriendly goes offline (32TP): Seattle, New Jersey, Carolina, Chicago, Islanders, Toronto, Columbus. Pittsburgh didn't have anything before, but once Dubas got there they started building something.
While a replacement for CapFriendly may emerge in the coming months, its quality isn't guaranteed to match. To ensure comparable functionality, NHL teams may need to invest resources in developing their own versions of the site.
As the offseason unfolds and CapFriendly is phased out, the wait begins to see how swiftly a successor emerges. Here's hoping for a swift arrival of a new resource in the near future.
